Previously he was the Intendant of the Wiener Symphoniker from 2011 to 2019. In addition, he completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts Administration at City University London in 1996.

And it was the first ensemble in the history of music to give a concert in the Antarctic (Elephant Bay), the seventh, southernmost continent on Earth. In 2002, he switched to become the chief manager at Bayerischer Rundfunk (with Mariss Jansons and Marcello Viotti). Gustav Mahler conducted the orchestra in the world premieres of his 4th and 8th Symphonies, and in November 1911, the world premiere of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde took place under Bruno Walter's direction. Ferdinand Löwe led the first Bruckner concerts and established the orchestra's Bruckner tradition, which was then gloriously continued by general music director Sergiu Celibidache. In 1995 he took on a teaching position in cultural management at the Europa University Viadrina in Frankfurt an der Oder. Paul Müller was a strong advocate for the construction of the Isarphilharmonie, which opened in October 2021 and has since attracted thousands of visitors as the orchestra's new home.

Moving to Paris in 1975, he became a partner in the artistic agency Opéra et Concert. He also worked closely with Herbert von Karajan for many years. Engstroem moved to Switzerland in 1986. During this period, he was a consultant for EMI France, for the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele and the Opéra national de Paris.
In 1991 he started to put together what in 1994 became the Verbier Festival & Academy for which he remains the artistic and executive head as Founder & Director. In 2000 and 2005, he set up respectively the Verbier Festival Orchestra and the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. In 2013, a new education project was launched under his initiative, the Verbier Festival Music Camp (today renamed the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra).
From 1999 to 2003, Engstroem was Vice-President of Deutsche Grammophon for the sector ‘Artists and Repertoire'. Then from 2003 to 2005, he was appointed Senior Executive Producer & Artist Development.
In 2019 he started two new Festivals. One in Riga, the capital of Latvia and one in Tsinandali in the heart of Georgia.

He is the Artistic Director of the National Centre for the Performing Arts May Festival in Beijing and is on the jury of several international competitions such as the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition and the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition. Born in Hunan, China, in 1991, LAI Jiajing received her first piano lesson when she was five. In 2009, she entered the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where she studied conducting under CHEN Lin. LAI Jiajing obtained her Master's Degree in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2018.
In 2018, LAI Jiajing won the 2nd prize and OFUNAM prize in the 1st OFUNAM International Conducting Competition and returned to China National Centre for Performing Arts, premiering an NCPA production Chamber Opera A Story About Growing Up, which was a notable highlight.
LAI Jiajing's talent in music has earned her much attention in recent years from, and was recognised by, a few leading conductors including Lorin Maazel, Bernard Haitink and Michael Tilson Thomas, who also kindly offered their help in perfecting LAI's skills.
